Gourmets & Gourmands festival at the Carpe Diem School in George, South Cape

Gourmets & Gourmands: There’s perfect harmony in food & wine pairing

Food and wine pairing for the connoisseur and the food lover

One thing we all remember from either taking home economics or dating someone who did, is that you have to include all basic food groups in order to create a healthy balanced meal. So it stands to reason that, to most of us, the term food pairing implies serving some vegetables with a portion of carb’s and meat. But to the expert, the connoisseur and even the food lover, the term implies that you have a little Van Gogh in you coupled with a bit of Brangelina; flair and chemistry.

Wine and food pairing is the process of matching food dishes with wine to enhance the dining experience. In many cultures, wine has had a long history of being a staple at the dinner table, and in some ways both the winemaking and culinary traditions of a region will have evolved together over the years.

And until we can get a first-hand taste of how the experts pair, I’ll leave you with this thought. My dearest mother was right about a lot of things in life, but food pairing was clearly not one of them, so I am happy to set the record straight – go ahead, play with your food!
