Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo the face of Southern Cape Tourism

The Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo beauty pageant sets out to crown the face of Southern Cape Tourism. Twelve of the Garden Route and Klein Karoo's most beautiful ladies are presented to the Southern Cape public at a glamorous gala evening boasting with performances by top South African artists in the presence of numerous South African celebrities. The showcase also provide for a fashion showcase showcasing the talent of Southern Cape designers.


Southern Cape Community charity drive

The Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo beauty pageant acts as Southern Cape community charity drive in aid of Southern Cape shelters for battered and abused women and children. Ladies residing at such shelters are treated to beauty sessions within their respective towns. All proceeds generated from Southern Cape event ticket sales acts as donations to shelters for battered and abused women and children. Current beneficiaries include Creating Effective Families (Mossel Bay), Phambili (George), Malibongwe (Oudtshoorn) and Women Who Care (Knysna). The publicity gained for the Southern Cape shelters for battered and abused women and children are priceless.

Facets of the competition kick of in May and culminate to the semifinals, on 20 September when the 12 finalists of the Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo beauty pageant will be chosen to compete for the crown on the gala evening 25 September 2010.

Below is a short description of each of the four shelters benefiting from the annual Miss Garden Route & Klein Karoo beauty pageant.

Creating Effective Families – Mossel Bay
The organization, Creating Effective Families, offers a professional and holistic therapeutic service to families in the Mossel Bay area. Here specialist social workers attend to important issues relating to creating effective families. Issues dealt with include family and marriage counseling, alcohol and drug abuse, domestic violence and trauma support.

The CEF Shelter also offers a temporary save heaven for victims of family violence, woman and children. During their temporary stay in the Shelter theses victims are counseled and they can make key decisions on their feature.

Creating Effective Families provides shelter for women and their children for up to three months and a place of safety for children. A 24-hour rape crisis centre is also run by CEF.


Malibongwe – Oudtshoorn
The Woman Oppose Violenc: Malibongwe Woman’s Shelter for Abused Women situated in Oudthoorn. They offer a safe house for woman in crisis situations.


Women Who Care – Knysna
WOMEN WHO CARE s run by a small group of women who are keenly aware of the serious plight of the poor, as well as providing a safe haven and offering aid to physically abused women.

WOMEN WHO CARES also provide very necessary shelter and aid to abused women. Abuse knows no colour or age, and it is a very serious worldwide problem. There is often very little help on hand for these women, but WOMEN WHO CARE has recognized this need and strives to provide a safe haven for those abused women and their children.

WOMEN WHO CARE also undertakes to educate women and help them obtain a life that is free from abuse and poverty. These abused women are referred to the proper authorities and counseling is given, clothing and food provided for them and their children, until they are ready to leave.


Phambili Refuge - George
Phambili provide and sustain a temporary place of safety for abused women and their children in crises. The purpose of intervention and counselling is to restore their self-esteem, empower, educate, rehabilitate and reintegrate women into the community. Their vision is to provide support and strengthen woman to be able to break free from the physical, emotional and economical cycle of abuse.

The women and their children are admitted to the shelter for a period of three months. During this time they participate in a Treatment and Care Plan where our main goal is enabling these woman and their children to break free from the cycle of abuse, family violence and assist them to function independently within the community.

The refuge provides a service not only to the George community, but also to the other towns in the Eden District without shelters for abused woman.
